Notes from the CNA General Meeting on 4 March 2010
Board Members Attending: June Meitz, Bob Meitz, Bill Newcomb, Joe Murphy
Meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM by Vice-president June Meitz
1. Probation Office Report: Joe Pallo reported on current activity including probationers helping with cleanup in preparation for the 2010 Home Tour. Thanks for the cooperation and help.
He pointed out that the department has been in the neighborhood for 15 years or so. They will be re-establishing their mission, writing a new mission statement and continuing active engagement with the community. They plan to keep involved with Coronado. They hope to help community residents, particularly the elderly who live alone and may need assistance with maintaining yards and exteriors. They will also undertake tree trimming once again.
2. Detective Espinosa filled in for Manny and provided an update on recent burglaries in Coronado. Two weeks ago, a witness saw a suspect and wrote down his license plate number. This suspect has been arrested, and detectives believe that he may be responsible for 90% of recent burglaries in our area. They also believe that his arrest may lead to other possible perpetrators.
3. Several members suggested that we post or send out a message when minutes are posted on the association website.
4. Committee Reports:
Feral Cats – Andrea del Galdo reported on progress in rounding up, spaying/neutering and releasing feral cats.
Park Committee – Andrea reported that work on Coronado Park will start in the near future and that we had received a grant for improving Virginia Park.
Garden Committee – We are only waiting for Spring weather, so activity should start soon. Members are reminded that they can use the community garden.
There was a reminder that the Encanto Park Planning Committee meets the first Monday of each month at Phoenix College. Not much is happening on Senate Bill 1166 at the moment and there is some feeling that it will not become law, but it should be watched.
Home Tour – Bob Meitz gave a preliminary report on attendance, revenue and costs for the tour. A more complete report will be posted on the Coronado website. Although steady rain most of the day of the tour affected attendance somewhat, we still had approximately 450 paid attendees.
It was noted that a Home Tour volunteer’s car was burglarized during the pre-tour party, and she lost a laptop and other items. Members and tour volunteers are contributing to a fund to help her recoup some of her losses not covered by insurance. $46.00 was collected at the meeting.
After some discussion, Maureen Rooney moved that: The Association should match member contributions to this fund up to a maximum of $250.00.
The motion was seconded by Andrea del Galdo and will be voted on at the April meeting. (Should be put on the agenda)
Additional contributions may be sent to the Association and should be identified as a contribution to the “Camille Fund”.
5. Other Items:
Bob Meitz mentioned that the board would be drafting and proposing a policy and procedure for a periodic internal audit.
Six representatives of the Phoenix City Prosecutor’s office attended the meeting and were introduced. Assistant City Prosecutor Esteban Gomez explained that their office was interested in working with neighborhoods throughout the city. They asked if we were engaged in any partnerships with local businesses, religious organizations in the area, etc. A number of topics including grants, graffiti and the Coronado Dispatch were discussed.
Feral cats in Brentwood – A member observed that there were a large number of feral cats in that neighborhood, particularly on Brill. After some discussion, Ellen Edwards moved that: The Association should spend $500.00 to spay/neuter feral cats in the Brentwood area. The motion was seconded by Andrea del Galdo and will be voted on at the April meeting. (Should be put on the agenda)
Additional measures including a possible fundraiser for spay/neuter efforts were discussed.
Members were reminded that board and officer elections will be held at the annual meeting in May and that we need nominees to fill these positions before or at the April meeting. Members should be encouraged to volunteer and/or nominate other members who would be willing to serve.
