Home Tour 2010 was a Day of Discovery!
Undiscovered Coronado: the Brentwood Historic District
As one of the largest and most diverse neighborhoods in central Phoenix, Coronado is full of little known treasures such as our February home tour destination: the Brentwood Historic District. On Sunday February 28th, in spite of record rain, hundreds of intrepid visitors discovered a darling block of 1930s homes on East Willetta.
We Made History
The 2010 Coronado home tour featured two "firsts." February 28th was the very first home tour in the Brentwood Historic District, located in the southeast corner of the greater Coronado neighborhood. And the Church of God in Christ generously opened their doors to the public for the first time, displaying recent renovation and preservation efforts. Built by the Church of Latter Day Saints as a Stake House and now home to the largest African American church in the state, this majestic building conveys much cultural, religious, and architectural significance. We were inspired
Leading up to tour day, our Brentwood neighbors showed how much good can come from organizing as a block: they planted dozens of young trees to create future streetscapes and painted an elderly neighbor's house, demonstrating the unique sense of community that is Coronado. They shared the intricate brickwork and beautiful historic details of their homes on tour day and they shared their stories of perseverance as they transformed neglected houses into wonderful homes. Our tour vendors were awesome, braving the rains until the sun shined through. (Please support them!) And 97 volunteers helped-- in one way or another, from selling tickets to designing an incredible tour brochure-- to organize what turned out to be one of the nicest tour experiences to date despite the cold and damp.
The Discovery Continues!
A portion of each tour ticket purchased seeded renovations to Virginia Park, another undiscovered spot in Coronado. The pocket park at 15th Street and Virginia will be transformed into a real treasure over the next year thanks to you. The remainder of your home tour ticket purchase will support other activities and projects that improve Coronado and, yes-- support the neighborhood association's operating costs too. Without the Association, there'd be no home tour. So if you are not already a member, please join.
If you would like to help plan the 2011 Coronado home tour, and discover your neighborhood in a whole new way, contact the association president.
